Altan Xan
(1507-1582) Leader of the Tümed Mongols. Altan Xan contributed to the dissemination of Buddhism in Mongolia by inviting Tibetan monks to perform religious activities in Mongolia around 1573, meeting in 1578 with the Dalai Lama to establish official relations and proclaiming Buddhism as the official religion of his dominion. Altan Xan's considerable influence among the Mongol princes contributed to the rapid adoption of Buddhism throughout Mongolia.
