Cagaan Denzh
This earthen wall, known as "Cagaan Denzhiin Balgas", is situated 14 kilometres to the north-east of Bayannuur sum centre in Bulgan aimag, at N 47°57'214", E 104°39'918", and an elevation of 978 metres above sea level.
The construction has a square layout, and is made of compressed earth. One interesting feature of its organization is the presence of additional walls within the main wall – measuring 200 metres along the east and west, and 165 metres along the north and south. The average height of this wall ranges from 0.6-1.2 metres; it has a breadth of 9-10 metres at its base and approximately 3 metres at its top surface. There is a gate in the centre of the southern flank of the wall, occupying a space of approximately 33 metres. There is no protective wall surrounding the entrance. The heights of the inner and outer walls are nearly identical. There was a gate in the middle of this inner wall, whose remains include two square white granite stones that served as the foundations for its wooden frame.
In the centre of Cagaan Denzh there are three earthen structures. The southernmost and central structures are both square, and have identical dimensions – 30 metres in length, 10 metres in width, and 0.6 metres in height. The northernmost structure has a length of 12 metres and a width of 10 metres. These three structures are made of earth and their top surface is perfectly flat. They are interconnected by fine earth, like a necklace. There are traces of the former presence of some type of earthen construction in the eastern section of the large, exterior wall. There are no construction materials, pottery fragments or other artefacts within this ruin. Cagaan Denzhiin Balgas appears to date from the Xitan period, and served either as a ritual structure or as a large earthen tomb with underground burial. Currently this site has not been studied in detail. [1]
