Points to investigate
(Move these into dedicated pages as we get more information.)
According to Bayarsed, Animal Husbandry Officer in the local government office (28-07-2011), there are seven formal "herder groups" (малчдын бүлэг) altogether in Yero'o', including six from the UNDP SGM project and one established by the Norwegian Yero'o' Sheep project. Currently there are no cooperatives, although it seems likely that Yero'o' hybrid sheep producers will want to form a cooperative in order to take advantage of the 2000 MNT premium that will be offered next year by the Government of Mongolia.
The Buman Yero'o' malchdyn bu'leg (near Xandgait), headed by B. Boldbaatar (head), has received wool processing equipment from the Amin Tus NGO.
- The Culture Centre 50th anniversary: August 17.
- There is currently no publicly-funded veterinary service in Yero'o'. Although there is a private clinic, it seems that the owner of this clinic is not there all the time. Bayarsed mentions (28-07-2011) that there is very little money in veterinary practice these days, so no one wants to enter veterinary school. We should check the state of enrollment at the Agriculture University in Darxan, and also meet with the local veterinarian.
Aug. 20: The Norwegian project will give sheep to 2 new families (Amin Tus NGO). They seem to be operating now as a sort of rotating credit scheme, where families receive 50 sheep and pay interest, in sheep, over several years after a 3-year grace period; the sheep collected in this manner are made available to a new household. Possibly the Shaazgait herders know more about this.
Households camping near mines to collect money. 7-8 households: ~200.000 (up to 2.000.000) MNT each, to prevent future complaints.
- Ardyn Elch quiet due to bribes.
- No news about the mines here.
- People coming as individuals, and bringing their livestock later. Position that the number of livestock-keeping households should be limited (pasture capacity).
From other visits:
Recent meeting in Darxan. 2000 MNT premium for fine-wool sheep; cooperatives.
- Dust from the mining trucks and aaruul
- Rumours that the spring has dried up; but also that Ardyn Elch opened a new children's camp there
