Deel

The main element of the Mongolian traditional dress, the deel or devel is a robe-type garment with long sleeves, a wide flap that folds over the chest and buttons on the right, a high collar, and a cloth sash worn around the waist.

Men's working deels are usually made of heavy cotton or woolen fabric, while women's and fancy deels are often made of print silk. Deels for use in winter are lined with sheep or goat skin. Many herders still make and wear their own deels and boots, but increasingly Mongolians have adopted Western-style clothing; nowadays most city residents only wear the traditional Mongolian costume on holidays, such as at CAGAAN SAR (the lunar New Year), or on special occasions, such as at school graduation or wedding ceremonies.
