Help on Forums
This page provides instructions for users of the Forums feature on this wiki. Help and discussion for administrators and developers is available on the page ForumConfiguration.
Using the "forum" feature
This wiki features a distributed commenting system, allowing both online and offline users to write comments that will be organized in the form of a linear discussion.
Discussion is organized by topic. For each topic there are three types of pages.
A main topic page. For example: MoinForum/SampleTopic. This page is intended to introduce the topic by giving background information, a question or set of questions to discuss, and possibly a summary of the discussion so far.
Comment pages. For example: MoinForum/SampleTopic?action=supplementation.
- To view the forum page, click on the "Forum" link in the sidebar.
- The comments will be listed by default from oldest to newest, showing the author of each comment on the left and their comment on the right. If there are too many comments to fit on a page, you will see "next" and "previous" buttons. Clicking on these buttons will show more comments.
The following information is show about each contributor: Their photograph (see #Avatars below), their name (clicking on this will lead to their profile page), the date and time of the comment, and a "permalink" (see below).
Individual comment pages. For example: MoinForum/SampleTopic/C1302254984EricThrift@Dornogobi. The link labelled "permalink" leads to a page containing the individual comment shown. If you want to refer to someone else's comment, you should give the name of this page.
Adding a comment
To add your comment to a discussion, go to the "Forum" page for that topic and click on the button marked "Post a new comment" at the bottom of the page. This will open a text editor in the web browser (if you are accessing the wiki over the internet) or in a separate program on your computer (if you are accessing the wiki in Desktop mode). Write and save your comment.
Etiquette
Productive discussion requires respect. Abusive comments will not be tolerated. Anyone who posts comments that are defamatory, libellous, or condone violence or hatred against others will have their comments removed and their account suspended.
Please do not attempt to edit other people's comments, or to impersonate another user.
Creating a profile
The name of each contributor is linked to a profile page (or "home page"). You can view and edit your own profile page by clicking on your username, which is always shown at the top of the screen when you are logged in. You are not required to create a profile page, and if you do, it is up to you to decide what information it will contain.
Avatars
An "avatar" or photograph of each contributor is shown next to any posts they make on a forum page. If the user has not uploaded an avatar, a grey box will be shown instead.
To upload an avatar:
- Find a recent photo of yourself, or take a new one.
- Crop the photo so that it is square, preferably 100x100 pixels. (You can do this using the photo editing tools in Windows or linux.) Save the cropped photo.
Go to MyPages and look for the link at the bottom of the page, where it says "upload an avatar". Click on this link.
- Enter the name of your image file in the form, and upload.
Starting a discussion
To create a new discussion, create a main topic page with the text #pragma supplementation-page on in one line at the top of the page. This will enable the commenting feature.
Troubleshooting
- My posts don't show up on the forum page!
Make sure that you have logged in with a fully qualified username. Your username should look like FirstnameLastname@SiteName.
- My avatar looks distorted.
- Make sure that your avatar image is square and not too large (100x100 pixels is the best size). You can upload a new avatar to replace the old one.
- I made a typing error, and I want to edit my comment.
- Click on "permalink" under the time and date of your comment. This will take you to a page showing only your comment. Then you can click on "edit" in the sidebar, and make any changes you need.
- I want to delete a comment.
- Click on "permalink" under the time and date of your comment. Then select "Delete Page" from the "More Actions" menu in the sidebar.
