Help on translation
This page provides information for translators and project managers working with MoinMoin and OmegaT.
Source-language pages to be assigned for translation are prepared using the PackagePages action in the MoinMoin content management system. As a translator, you will receive a zip file containing one or more numbered documents and a file MOIN_PACKAGE, which lists the documents and filenames (this does not need to be translated). You will need to unzip this file before importing it into the translation program.
To work with OmegaT
- Install the translation program (you will be supplied a copy if necessary).
- Start the program. You will see something like this:
- Under the "Options" menu, select "File Filters..." A new window will open up:
- Select "Text Files" and click the "Edit..." button:
- A new window will open up:
Press the "Add..." button and fill in the "Add Pattern" box. Under "Source Filename Pattern" write a single asterisk (*) and under Source File Encoding select UTF-8. Then press the "OK" button in this window and in the other windows that are still open.
- Under the "Project" menu, select "New..." and select a folder where you want to create a new directory for the translation files. Type the name of the new directory in the text area (in the screenshot below, the new directory will be called "Translation"):
After pressing "OK", you should see a window like the one shown below. Click the "OK" button.
- Now you will see an empty "Project Files" window. You can close this window.
- Using the file (Windows) manager, navigate to the directory you selected for your project. You should see folders labelled "dictionary", "glossary", "omegat", "source", "target", and "tm".
- Create a new subfolder in the "source" directory, and copy the unzipped files to be translated there.
- Copy the translation memory file (e.g., "translate-omegat.tmx") to the "tm" directory.
- Copy the glossary file (e.g., "glossary.utf8") to the "glossary" directory.
- Now go back to OmegaT, press "F5" to reload the project, and you should see your files. Click on any of these files to open it, then close the "project files" window.
- Click on a segment to translate it. Similar or identical translations (from the translation memory) will be shown in the "Fuzzy Matches" panel at the top right. Matching words in the glossary will be shown in the "Glossary" panel at the bottom right.
- When you have translated all the segments (or earlier if you wish), OmegaT will update the target document(s) using the translations stored in the translation memory. To do so, select Project → Create Translated Documents from the menu. OmegaT will build translated versions of all the translatable documents in the Source folder of the project, whether or not they have been fully translated. The wholly or partially translated files will be saved to the project's Target folder.
- To submit your completed translations, please copy:
- All files in the "target" directory
- The file "translate-omegat.tmx" from the root directory
