Karakorum graves

Part of the Orxon Valley Cultural Landscape World Heritage Site. Situated at Karakorum.

Three graves were excavated in 1975-1978.[1] The first grave contained disarrayed, cremated remains of a child at a depth of 21-22 cm from the surface. Alongside the remains were found two 11th-century Chinese coins, a metal child's ring, and a six-sided white necklace. This was the first discovery of cremated remains in Mongolia, leading to the hypothesis that the grave could have been that of a foreigner. The second grave contained blue brick fragments, pottery with a black outer and yellow interior enamel, and various metal objects. The human remains were fund at a depth of 40 cm from the surface. The third grave contained the remains of eight wooden stakes, thought to be the bottoms of fence poles surrounding the grave, as well as animal bone fragments, and roofing tile fragments, but no human remains.
