About the Mongolian Digital Ethnography Archive

The Mongolian Digital Ethnography Archive is operated by the Culture and Development Research Centre (CDRC), with the aim of promoting and disseminating the results of ethnographic research in Mongolia. The archive fosters an applied focus on environmental and human development issues, aiming to encourage the grounding of political discourse and governance in detailed, local-scale analyses of contemporary social practices, revealing how the human-ecological environment--made up of social, political, cultural, geographic, and other structures--is navigated by individuals and groups.

We define the "ethnographic" as an area concerning contemporary practices that reflect and construct social structures and understandings at the local level. As distinct from folklore or "salvage" research, this archive includes documentation of cultural activities that are contemporary, productive, and changing. This archive encourages both local, comparative, and synthetic studies, particularly those involving the active and equitable participation of diverse groups (Mongolian, external scholars, local community members).

Much of the initial content on this site was created by EricThrift and colleagues through the research project on "Adaptive Capacity of Pastoral Resource Users in Mongolia", funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Government of Manitoba, the International Development Research Centre, and the University of Manitoba.
