Technical Notes
The Mongolian Digital Ethnography Archive uses a MoinMoin-based storage engine for archival and cataloguing of digital materials. This software has been selected as it offers the following advantages:
- The system is open source and easily customizable.
- Catalogue data can be recorded in plain text. This makes the data accessible at low level to text processing tools (e.g., format conversion, synchronization, indexing).
The archive content can be imported, exported, and synchronized, at any classification level, among local (offline) and cloud-based instances. This is specifically important in allowing access to digital collections in places where Internet access is limited or very expensive. The archive software will run on any computer platform (Windows, linux, OSX, etc.)
- Items (the lowest-level archival unit) are stored together as digital files within a folder corresponding to an archival "file". This makes it easy to move or copy groups of digital documents using the computer file system, rather than having to work through a clumsy application interface.
- Access to collections and files can be configured using access control lists.
We have implemented a series of templates for cataloguing collections and items using ISAD(G) description fields, in Mongolian and English. Description pages are bilingual, but generally only one of the content languages will be shown based on the user's preference.
